What is OSS ?
OSS systems support e-TOM’s Fulfillment, Assurance and Billing processes and provide the following basic functions: end-to-end provisioning of the service to be delivered, the proactive monitoring of all network layers and connections, and automated correlation and rerouting whenever possible, the collection and management of usage data in the areas of traditional voice (CDRs) and new forms of content (IPDRs).
The OSS layer realizes the integration of the underlying variety of network technologies for these end-to-end business processes. This integration is increasingly taking place on the basis of (near) real-time processing and the operator is consequently faced with challenges in terms of scalability and robustness.
Improvements and innovations are often difficult to implement due to the existence of mission critical legacy systems that are difficult to access and break down into components, the lack of system support for multi-vendor environments and the creation of so-called product silos due to the already implemented diversity of billing (pre- and post-paid) and messaging (SMS, MMS) services.
