IPTV and Video on Demand

IPTV
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television and allows television watching over a broadband (internet) connection. This TV technology was developed at the end of the last century and is used in the Netherlands by companies such as Tele2 for Tele2 TV and by KPN for providing KPN Interactive TV.

IPTV is often used to provide access to public television programs. A typical characteristic of IPTV is however its user interaction. While traditional digital TV offers one-directional services for a large public, IPTV makes it possible to offer new services aimed at the individual user. Examples include Video on Demand, Tele Voting, Online Gaming and Home Shopping which are facilitated via so-called ‘Red Button Functions’. Using a remote, the viewer can select a program, movie or additional service. In addition, the viewer can order something or vote for a favorite artist.

The current platforms make it possible to offer theme channels to specific target groups. In addition, it is possible for a user to assemble his/her own program selection and receive suggestions about upcoming programs based on previous viewing behavior and preferences. Services that are currently already available via the internet, such as the sharing of videos and photos will also become available via TV. In addition, placing calls or using a baby phone with a screen will also be possible.

IPTV is suitable for network operators who have a broadband IP network such as xDSL or fiber optic; however, mobile data operators are also offering IPTV services. IPTV delivers digital television via IP, whereby MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or VC-1 video coding is often used as a means of transferring programs. Cable television operators make limited use of IPTV because they use different technologies, such as DVB-C.

To offer IPTV requires a platform that digitizes and distributes the programs (video content) to the end-users. Users can select and view the program via a Set Top Box, a remote and a video screen.
